Project: 2024-1-PT01-KA220-VET-000253813

Project Overview:

SYMBIOS is a new Erasmus+ project focused on exploring industrial symbiosis in the agrifood and leather sectors. The project will analyse existing practices, regulatory frameworks, and future opportunities to design a replicable model that supports Europe’s ecological transition and strengthens the circular economy. Special attention will be given to agrifood and leather, both key industries for the European market. A major outcome will be a digital platform dedicated to industrial symbiosis and aimed at becoming a tool for information, awareness, training, learning and support professional development in the Green & Circular Economy, while also connecting companies to foster collaboration through symbiotic practices.

Project Start: 31 August 2025                                        Project Duration: 30 months (29-Feb-2028)

Consortium:

Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique (UPT) - Portugal,
IATA - CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE INVESTIGACIONES CIENTÍFICAS - Spain,
COTANCE - EU,

Stakeholders’ involvement in Symbios:

Stakeholders involved in the project can be tanners, academic researchers, technicians, entrepreneurs, managers, leather experts, etc. Stakeholders will be involved in actions such as:

  • Focus Groups: a short online session (about 1–1h15) with at least 6 stakeholders. The aim is to discuss current trends in industrial symbiosis in the leather sector and to identify key topics of interest. The focus groups will give us valuable first insights, which will then be explored further through broader industry surveys, interviews, sectoral literature review
  • Testing of the Symbios Digital Platform: this will involve trying out the beta version of the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) and sharing feedback to help improve it.

Stakeholder’s Benefits:

  • Influence the Future of Leather Industry: Directly shape a European model for industrial symbiosis by sharing your insights. Your input will guide training tools, policy recommendations, and practical solutions tailored to the agrifood and leather sectors;
  • Early Access to Tools and Training: Be among the first to test and benefit from the SYMBIOS digital platform, including a MOOC designed to support green upskilling, innovation, and circular business practices;
  • Visibility and Networking Across Europe: your involvement will boost your visibility and open doors to future collaborations and partnerships.
