TANWEEK attracts 770 teenagers in Italy

TANWEEK, the COTANCE promoted initiative to raise awareness in the general public and notably among young people on Science and Technology in the leather industry, attracted some 800 participants of which 770 teenagers coming from schools located in all Italian tanning areas.

The event took place on 8 November 2002 in Bologna’s Congress Centre suitably located next to the city’s fairgrounds where LINEAPELLE, Europe’s largest leather trade fair, took place. Participants could also visit TANNING TECH, the sector’s technology fair that was still going on during the TANWEEK event.

TANWEEK presented throughout the day conferences, slide shows and animations highlighting the importance of science and technology in the leather industry and how these have changed the face of this ancient craft into a pioneering industrial sector in Europe.

Special attention was given to environmental achievements and quality improvements in processes and products aiming at changing the perception of the industry by the general public and at attracting young people to join the industry in the numerous job opportunities it offers.

COTANCE produced for TANWEEK a 5-minute video, “Leather works in progress”, conveying artistically the message of science and technology as well as a small brochure summarising in 10 pages technical achievements that have brought about improved working conditions in and living conditions nearby tanning areas as well as improvements in the sector’s products making leather a desirable and safe material in modern lifestyles. Both were presented at the Bologna Event.
