COTANCE meets in Pompeii

COTANCE’s 2009 Assembly General and Council took place on June 5 in Pompeii, at the site’s “Auditorium degli Scavi”. The encounter offered  the opportunity to visit the ancient Roman tannery in the archaeological site that was recently restored thanks to UNIC (Unione Nazionale Industria Conciaria), COTANCE’s Italian member.

A new Social project for the European Leather Industry (2008-2009)

On 27 November, the European social partners, COTANCE and ETUF:TCL, held the Kick-off meeting of their new common Social project. Indeed, in June 2008 they signed the Framework Agreement on Social (and Environmental) Reporting and decided that this Common standard needed to be:

1. translated in all Community languages
2. promoted in the industry in all Member States
3. tested by the sector’s Companies

In the course of this EU-sponsored project, which started on 1st November 2008 and will last one year, the Framework Agreement will be translated in the various EU languages and provided to the sector’s companies, of which the majority are SME’s, together with a Template to make it easier for them to draft their Social Report and Environmental Declaration on a voluntary basis.
The Framework Agreement will also be printed in a multi-lingual (4-5 languages to be decided) handy brochure as a dissemination tool for the sector’s SME’s so that the most dynamic sector’s companies can provide it to their stakeholders along with their own company Report.

The REACH Challenge & Innovation in the European Leather Industry

On 27 October, COTANCE held a Round Table at the highest level of the organised European Leather Industry. It was co-hosted by GERIC, the grouping of European Leather Technology Centres, and focused on the changes that the new EU Chemicals policy has brought about in the Leather business and on the Leather market.

The Leather Industry has experienced significant changes over recent decades. New global players have emerged, supply conditions have mutated and consumption patterns have evolved. New rules affecting the leather trade and industry are forging a new business environment in the sector. REACH in particular opens a new paradigm for doing business in the leather industry not only in Europe, but globally.
